"That, which one tries to express
or to show figuratively is always already set in the context of ones
social, technical, cultural, physical and natural environment.
Thus every art is naturally to do with story telling, even when the
artwork does not explicitly intend to tell stories. In this, I am
concerned with examining ones own nature and surroundings, with tensions
and contradictions, but also with the harmony which simultaneously
coexists in an object, a life, a thought."

Patterns of Vision This series has developed from the Mindmaps. The pieces are concerned with the multitudinal landscapes of iris and pupil and with the images emerging, when one looks into bright light and closes the eyes afterwards. Dissolving forms and explosions of colour that will be generated by the "inner" eye are overlaid on landscapes of iris and pupil. |
|||
|
Mindmaps are in some respect landscapes. Emotional overlays and descriptions of events that are related to a particular place are confronted with a map of the same place. Tecnically, mindmaps are works on canvas with a sand foundation painted with acrylics, egg-tempera and oil paint, enhanced with crayons, pigments, coffee and more. In some cases, the sand foundation sits on a base enforced with fine paper, wood or found objects stemming from the site depicted. |

„What's
what? What
do we really see? Here
beside us, in case we didn't know the title: a climate map with high and
low pressure areas? A map with pale altitudinal lines? Green an blue,
swinging meanders dissolving: Hints,
memories, inklings.
What causes us to associate with something, how does memory work?
How will we locate certain places, times, constellations in the landscape
of our memory? Why not different ones? Why
will our navigator through the estates of the past concentrate on certain
topics? And what will our memory do with those topics, when we find them
on our "mind-map”?“ Translation
of Reinhard
Rakows words about the painting „spring flood“ in his opening speech
at the private view of „Neue Malerei von Angela Rohr“ in Edewecht in October 2004 |

The material collages contain objects with a certain meaning, which may alter or expand in the context of the painting. For example, the root of a tree will turn into an opening in the surface of the canvas, bullet cases evoke war but could also represent a fence in front of a meadow.
The material collages are predominantly painted with acrylics and egg-tempera paint, crayons, pigments and are assembled with the aid of sand, paper and photographs and other things as well as found objects such as timber, that are sowed or scrued into or glued onto the canvas. In some pieces, the two-dimensional picture plane is distorted so much, that a three-dimensional depth of field is created. The predominantly abstract paintings show landscapes in the widest sense of the word, which are concerned with the connection of an image and its representation. The initial meaning of used objects can be modified by the context of the painting, even though most of the time the objects remain recognizable. |

In the exhibition "Überlagerungen der Wirklichkeit" (Layering Of Reality) in May 2001, I showed two double-exposed photographies, April and June. Their single layers could be read differently due to their new context. London Dystopia, another photographic series, tells about the interplay of a variety of layers in a city such as London, based on the assumption that the dreadful vision of a permanently flooded city due to constantly rising sea levels will come true one day. On those photographs, several layers of painted, perforated overhead-projector foil and black-and-white photographs have been merged to become a whole. |
|||
|
The majority of these pieces originate in my time at university and are thus project related. In most of them, photography, drawing and water colour have been combined on paper or tracing paper. |

The magazine Hagia Chora has published the article Ur-Sache about my work in an issue, which is about art and nature (no. 17, 5th edition 2003). The issue is called The earth talks an deals with the fields of Land Art, art with nature and eco art. The editors are concerned with the kind of art, that makes the relationship of man and nature its issue, or those forms, which sensitize man for his environment or which specifically result in the restauration of destroyed landscapes. |
